What is EXIF

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a metadata standard embedded in image files, established by JEIDA (Japan Electronic Industry Development Association). It records various parameters at the time of capture, including:

  • Camera brand and model
  • Capture date and time
  • Aperture, shutter speed, ISO and other exposure parameters
  • GPS location information
  • Image dimensions and resolution
  • Lens information and focal length

Viewing Metadata with EXIF Tool

Step 1: Upload Image

Open EXIF Tool, click the upload button or drag an image to the designated area. Supports JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebP formats.

Step 2: View EXIF Information

After uploading, the tool automatically parses and displays all EXIF tags, grouped by category:

  • Camera info: Brand, model, lens
  • Shooting parameters: Aperture, shutter speed, ISO
  • GPS location: Latitude, longitude, altitude
  • Image properties: Dimensions, resolution, color space

Step 3: Analyze Key Parameters

Focus on these parameters to evaluate shooting conditions:

  1. Aperture + Shutter + ISO: Determine if exposure is reasonable
  2. Focal length: Understand the lens angle of view used
  3. GPS: Confirm the shooting location (if present)

Step 4: Export or Share

Export EXIF information as JSON format for further processing or sharing.

Privacy & Security

GPS Privacy Risks

Many phones automatically record GPS coordinates when taking photos. Uploading to social media may reveal sensitive information like home address or workplace.

Recommendations:

  • Always remove GPS information before social sharing
  • Disable "Save location" in your phone camera settings
  • Use EXIF Tool to verify GPS data has been removed

Removing EXIF Information

Ways to remove EXIF:

  1. Using EXIF Tool: Upload the image, select "Remove all EXIF", and download
  2. Auto-remove during compression: Enable "Remove metadata" in Image Compress
  3. Remove during resize: Images processed by Image Resize don't contain EXIF by default

When to Keep EXIF

  • Photography sharing (preserve shooting parameters for reference)
  • Evidence photos (need time and location information)
  • Image management (auto-organize by capture date)

EXIF and Post-Processing

Lightroom / Photoshop Effects

  • Post-processing modifies some EXIF tags (e.g., Software)
  • You can choose to keep or remove EXIF on export
  • Keep complete EXIF in original files

Compression Effects on EXIF

  • JPEG lossy compression may preserve EXIF
  • PNG typically doesn't contain EXIF (but may have other metadata chunks)
  • WebP supports limited EXIF information

Common Issues

Issue Cause Solution
No EXIF info Lost after screenshot or editing Only original files have complete EXIF
GPS coordinates empty Location not enabled during capture Enable in phone settings
Inaccurate time Camera clock not calibrated Regularly calibrate camera time
Encoding garbled Non-standard EXIF format Re-parse with a professional tool

Practical Tips

  1. Verify camera time is calibrated before shooting for easy date-based organization
  2. Check for sensitive information with EXIF Tool before sharing photos
  3. Analyzing EXIF parameters of excellent photos is a great way to learn photography
  4. For batch processing, compress and remove EXIF first, then upload and share

Summary

EXIF is the "ID card" of images, recording rich shooting information. EXIF Tool lets you easily view, analyze, and manage this metadata. Pay attention to privacy protection — always check for sensitive information like GPS before sharing, and remove it if necessary before publishing.
